Myrtle - Rearing
A gorgeous big grey with spooking and rearing problems arrived in January. After working though ground exercises and learning some manners, Myrtle was good as gold for the first week, before showing us what she can do! Myrtle then did some work with pacifiers on to encourage her to think down and forward and since then has been progressing nicely. She has also learnt manners in the stable and how to relax and gain confidence in herself. Myrtle is now on livery with us so she and her owner can continue training and is now hacking and jumping! Myrtle is a pleasure to have on the yard!
A year later - Myrtle is still with us and has been on fun rides, cross country schooling and shes Mike's first choice to take out hunting! She hopes to try her hand at Dressage and Showjumping this summer! Pictures below are problem behaviour before and out hunting after!
‘Dani and Mike are true miracle workers. They have helped my mare change from a horse with extreme rearing behavioural problems to a really sweet and loving girl who really enjoys her work. Dani and Mike have showed amazing skill, patience and above all an amazing understanding of horses and their psychology. Myrtle is so happy with them that even though she has reached the end of her re-training, she is now staying with them on livery as I couldn’t think of a better place or more competent people to keep her with. They truly are a testament to what real horsemanship is all about. I would recommend them to anyone.’ Helen Mason
Tizzy - Remedial Starter
Tizzy a nicely bred bay gelding arrived with us in June 2011 after problems during the starting process at another yard. Tizzy had scared himself bucked a couple of riders off including rearing over backwards. After alot of desensitisation work, Tizzy accepted the dummy rider well and after a few weeks, Mike was riding him at walk, trot and canter in the round pen. Tizzy went home to mature over the summer and returned in September for the next steps. After some issues getting him going forward, Tizzy is now working well in the big arenas and is ready to go home.
Diane - Starting
We first met Diane at The Cotswold Show where she came as a demo horse. A big but sweet nature mare, Diane tries really hard but had some ground issues with spooking and knocking people over. Diane started with ground work using the Dually headcollar and desensitisation to plastic and flags. She bucked with the saddle for the first couple of days but quickly developed balance and steering on the longlines. Knowing how sensitive she can be we started work with the dummy rider but it soon became clear she wasn't very bothered and Mike started riding her. Diane is now staying on livery so Mike and her owner can continue riding her until she has a break for the winter. Diane is for sale.
Sorcha - Starting
Arriving at the beggining of October 2011 for starting, Sorcha had previosuly done some work with another trainer with similar methods to us. Both Sorcha and her owner had learnt alot about basic ground manners from this time and Sorcha was nicely sensitive to the Dually halter when we went to pick her up. Although she still needs some work with loading, this training has greatly helped the first stages of her training. During her first 6 weeks with us, Sorcha worked through desensitisation, longlining and accepted a rider brilliantly, and even started jumping! Sorcha is now staying on livery with us as her owner is pregnant and we are looking for a rider for her a few days a week.
Bartizan - Remedial Starter
A gorgeous spotty appaloosa who had already done alot of work with the dummy rider at a previous yard is a tricky horse! His main issues are through his right eye, spooking and then bucking. His owner had already done alot of work, but with our roundpen we were able to go one step further with the dummy rider and desensitisation at trot and canter. Bart was going really well with Mike riding firstly in the roundpen and then in the bigger school, and we were working on changes of direction in trot, switching the view of rider between each eye. After a small setback where Bart made himself stiff after a bucking spree and had to have a week off, Bart is now going well again and we are getting back to the stage we were previously at! Meanwhile, Bart is learning how to balance himself in canter on the longlines.
Dorcas - Youngster for Handling/Feet Handling
Dorcas is a beautiful and sweet 2 year old that has come to us for some feet handling, first rugs and leading and loading work. She is very accepting off everything we ask of her and is staying on livery until the spring ready for starting!
Beni - Starting
Beni came to us on livery from an exisiting client, Briony, who had another horse with us. Although Beni had been ridden briefly as a 3 year old, he came to us as a 4 year old needing more education and lessons on going forward and learning balance along with all the other things that youngsters need to learn. With our guidance, Briony worked with Beni through longlining, ground exercises and desensitisation before moving onto ridden work, first hacks, beginning jumping and even going to his first few shows (which included loading practise!) Beni was tough on the ground at first, but has turned into a super, intelligent youngster! Beni has gone home while Briony finishes her masters degree in Equine Science, but we hope they return soon!
Squirrel - Bucking and Re-Starting
A big bay mare that hadnt been given much of a chance before her current owner bought her. Squirrel had been backed very quickly, but lacked alot of basics including balance, brakes and steering! After bucking her owner off, she came to us to be re-started properly. Squirrel had to spend a while learning ground manners and longlining to help stop her bucking and learn how to balance herself. She is now being ridden successfully by Mike and her owner and is much more relaxed.
Rosie - Bucking
Rosie is a gorgeous little mare who had bucked her owner straight off after mounting a couple of times. The owner had bought her from someone who didn't have the time to ride her but had pictures of children jumping her etc. Rosie's behaviour during our groundwork exercises was brilliant and her owner aswell as being a qualified equine chiropractor, also had a second opinion and vet look at her, so her reason for bucking was unclear. After two weeks with us, she had not made enough improvement on the longlines so we came to the agreement that she needed to be scanned by the vet. Unfortunately, after much investigation, Rosie was found to have damage to the ligaments between her vertebrae caused by a rider too heavy before her current owner had her. Rosie is now looking at a career of driving or as a broodmare.
Prada- Rearing
Prada came to us in May this year because she has problems rearing both on the ground and ridden. With her previous owner Prada had panicked and reared over backwards, putting her in hospital. Although 5 years old, Prada hadn't done much ridden work, so we worked through lots of longlining and ridden exercises to help her gain an understanding of balance, steering, brakes and going forward. We also did a lot of ground exercises, L-Shape and Tarpulin work to stop her from rearing on the ground, making it uncomfortable on the Dually Halter when she was negative and rewarding her when she was positive. Before she went home, Prada's owner rode her sucessfully a few times and learnt the techniques to move forward with her when she went home.
Mystic - A Full Livery who at previous yards had problems with bolting and leading, is a beautiful Fresian Mare. She is lovely to ride and we are working on gaining her owners confidence.
Rou - StartingWhen this little new forest pony was a yearling,Dani worked with him over many months, educating him from first headcollar, leading, tying up, feet handling to rugs, plastic bags, tarpaulins and everything in between! Now at three years old Rou has come back to us for more education and starting. Having remembered most of what he learnt from when he was younger, Rou is very accepting of everything including the saddle and longlines. He worked through learning correct longlining and Dani sat on him a few times before he found a lovely new home!
Millie - Starting
A little sports horse mare has come to us for more education and ridden work. She is great on longlines and her ridden work is progressing well! Millie is for sale, please see our for sale page for details.
Lassie - Foaling!
A gorgeous throughbred mare that came to us for foaling! Having had both of her offspring in training (George and Daisy) we are very excited about her new arrival 'Bow' (by Rainbow High). As Equine Unity's first foal, he will always have a special place in our hearts! He is a cracking strong and brave foal, happy to be handled and lead and loves galloping around the field!
Dinky- Re-Training
A 3yr old little chestnut mare, Dinky had already been in training as a racehorse and a polo pony! She lacks understanding of slower and correct ridden work and came to us for re-schooling. Her owner, Eleanor is also having lessons. Having been with us 8 weeks, Dinky was hacking nicely and is generally more relaxed in day-to-day life. Dinky has finished her training and returned home, however we still visit her once a week and she returns every holiday! Dinky is currently looking for someone to ride her on a daily basis that has experience in bringing on youngsters - please contact us if you are interested.
BB - Spooky Remedial Starter
BB, is a 6 year old spooky pony who had previously been ridden as a 3 year old in Germany, but when the owners had trouble leaning over her she came to us for training. At first she was very spooky and wanted to blast away on the longlines. After lots of desensitisation including plastic bags and flags, longlining work and lots of work on leaning across and mounting, BB started to become much more relaxed. She is a very clever pony, who always goes back to the stable and falls asleep thinking about what she has learnt! - Latent Leaning at it's best! After 8 weeks with us, BB loved to hack out (especially cantering), was great at jumping and Mike had even ridden and jumped her while holding the flag! - What an amazing little horse!
Brenny, George, Brooksy, Daisy and Blossom - Racehorses
Brenny was in training with us for riding away and starting his education as a racehorse. A lovely natured horse, after he left us he started hacking out at home and has even did some jumping! Brenny spent sometime at the racing yard before returning home for the winter to mature - We expect to see Brenny again in the spring. George (Wychwoods Kaddy) had been in training before but had had a few months off, he came to us to be ridden before he went back to his racing yard. Now in training with Graeme Mcpherson, they are so pleased with how he arrived, they have sent us two more horses for starting! George ran in a few races and didnt disgrace himself at all, but after wind problems he has been retired from racing and is being retrained as a ridden horse.
Brooksy, a 4 year old gelding, full brother to Wychwoods Legend, came to us for pre-training after having some time off - We all have high hopes for this lovely horse! After being with us for 10 weeks, Brooksy's stable manners became much better, his fitness was building up and he started to learn how to carry himself better in canter, building up the correct muscles. He even started some jumping! Brooksy has currently gone home to mature but will be back soon!
Daisy and Blossom, two fillies destined for racing came to us for starting and pre-training. Daisy was quite straight forward, taking everything in her stride and learning well. After 6 weeks with us, including 2 weeks hacking, Daisy went into training with Graeme Mcpherson. After a short stint at the racing yard, Daisy went home to mature more physically and returned to us in April 2011 for pre-training...watch this space!
Blossom was very sensitive and needed alot of communication and desensitisation to the girth and stirrups. Now much more relaxed, Mike is riding her in trot and canter and she is progressing well. - Just shows how much the groundwork helps! After some problems with her teeth, Blossom went home to mature physically but has now returned to us - and what a difference! Not only has Blossom matured physically but mentally aswell, remembering everything we taught her and having a much more relaxed attitude to life! Blossom spent a few months with us for Pre-Training and is now at the racing yard ready to run her first race!
Wychwoods Dancer (Blossom) that we had at our yard for 8months for starting & pre-training ran in her first race 22/06/2011 and came 2nd!! From sensitive bucking horse that couldnt even cope with the girth or stirrups to confident bold racehorse for her first time out, she ran in the 5.40 bumper at Worcester, coming 2nd to a horse with form and beating several others that had form in p2p's etc. We are really pleased with her!
Dear Dani & Mike 22/7/10
I just wanted to send a brief note to thank you for all you’ve done for us & our horses over the last few months. Brenny (TB 3yr old), was being ridden away at home when we hit a naughty stage, in just 2 weeks you got us & him back on track! George (TB 4yr old), had been off for a 4 month holiday, again just 2 weeks and he was ready to go to his racing yard where he’s been going really nicely from day 1. Daisy & Blossom (TB 3yr olds), both needed starting and riding away, all done up to hacking out in 4 & 6 wks respectively. As you know, our horses are aimed for the race course, but we want them to be fully educated so that they can do another job if they aren’t cut out for it or when they retire, you’ve achieved that for both us & them. You’ve literally covered so many different needs for us, we really do appreciate you having gone the extra mile, including coming to us to help load up horses to come to you, loading sessions with the horses, their first shoes, first hacks & traffic experience and they have all left you looking and behaving beautifully. Finally good luck with your first point to pointers, and hope we’ll have a few days racing with you in the autumn. Kevin and Anne Glastonbury
Copper - Bolting Issues
Copper a 12.2 bolting ponywas with us before Christmas. He had issues with bolting and throwing his young rider off and then not wanting to be caught. After he gave his young rider concussion they decided he had to have some training. Copper comes across as very untrusting and spooky - lots of things for us to work with! We started with lots of desensitisation work to plastic bags and flags and have had his back checked. Copper's little rider really struggled with even lifting her hand to her face, so when riding Copper we have done lots of moving around on his back, waving arms around and even practising falling off him - teaching Copper how to relax, slow down and stand still when he gets worried, rather than bolting. After 4 weeks Copper's owner came to ride him and even managed to do around the world! A massive difference. Over the last few weeks we practised a variety of things with this cheeky pony, from cantering over tarpaulins to riding with a flag and then started teaching him how to slow down when jumping. Copper has now returned home, is being well behaved and his owners are very pleased with him!
Gem - Threshold and Loading Problems
Gem has threshold problems and very deep seated issues with coming in and out of stables and loading in horseboxes and trailers. We first met Gem on a callout when the owner asked us to help get her out her stable as she had been stuck in there for 6 days! As Gem was the hardest horse we have ever worked with, taking 5 hours to get her out the stable, we suggested Gem came to us for some training. In just less than one week, after much groundwork including backing up, teaching her to lower her head when walking under obstacles and walking though tunnels, Gem started walking in and out of our barn and stables! The next obstacle was the horsebox, on the first day we started loading practice with Gem she tried really well, ending up with both front feet inside the box and back feet closely behind, a massive step for this horse who has never loaded without sedation. The best thing was she stayed incredibly relaxed all the way through and tried very hard! After 3 weeks Gem was walking in and out of the horsebox with no problems and her owner had learnt how to load her, so we started working with the trailer - Gem could back in easily but found it very hard to walk in forward as she is so worried about hitting her head. Through much work Gem did eventually load into the trailer but both us and her owner Cat decided this was not the way forward for her as she was still so worried about her head and if one tiny thing went wrong in the future she could really hurt herself. When Gem travelled home (in a horsebox!) she loaded, travelled and unloaded perfectly, what a star!!

Thoughtful, sensitive, practical, sensible, knowledgeable and patient. Just a few of the many qualities displayed by Dani and Mike at Equine Unity. It's not the AA that's the 4th emergency service - it's these two! I did something I have never done before, I trusted them with my horse, my Raison D'Etre. I called them out to help me get Gem out of her stable. She'd been in it for 6 days and had had this threshold issue for over 5 years. It took 5 of us 5 hours in inclement weather to get her out. What impressed me about Dani and Mike was their sheer determination to find a solution.
Gem would easily override veterinary sedation for loading and i am delighted to report that Gem was brought home by Dani after extensive and creative work, in a small lorry without sedation! I have learnt alot about Gem's needs to keep her happy and healthy and to see life though her eyes. Equine Unity solved a problem which was Gem's final fronteer and I would recommend Dani and Mike to anyone who wants the best for their horse. Thank you

Blue - Bucking and Napping Problems
Blue came to us in March because he had problems with bucking and hacking out on his own. We worked with Blue through ground exercises, desensitisation, and then riding hacking alone and in company before jumping. After 6 weeks training with us and being hacked out and jumped sucessfully, Blue stayed with us on competition livery! At his first showjumping competition Blue and Mike got a double clear and came about 9th out of 50 entries! Blue has now gone home to do some dressage, jumping and hunting through the winter!
Wilf - Starter
Wilf came to us for starting. After a few weeks of ridden work Wilf was going beautifully.
Wilf went though the same process we use for most starters, desensitisation,
groundwork and longlining before riding in the school and hacking.
Fancy and Lolly -Racehorses
Arrived for starting 11/07/10 - two 4 year old fillies, a chestnut by Anshan out of Goodthyne Lady(Ire) (Good Thyne) (USA) and a bay by Blueprint(Ire) out of Splendid Choice (Ire) (The Parson) - Pictures on arrival and just before leaving
The girls now named by us Fancy and Lolly did fantastically well, working through groundwork, jumping and riding including lots of canter work ready for their racing careers.
Anshan filly started by us in the summer last year ran her first race 29/03/11 at Taunton (now named Dancing Emily) and won the 5.20 by 4 lenghts!!! Well done Fancy - as we called her!! Her field mate that we also had in training, Spendid Choice, has also just run in her first race and come third! - Well done girls!
Rio - Starter

Rio is a 4year old palamino arab that came to us for starting (22/08/10) Picture shows his first time wearing a saddle and longlining! Rio has done plastic work, tarpaulins and has proved a very honest pony who learns easily. In the first few weeks of being ridden, Rio's steering and brakes continued getting smoother and he was brilliant hacking out!
06/11/10
Thank you Dani and Mike for helping me start my 4 year old pony Rio. I have had Rio since he was a foal and he has only ever known people as a source of kindness, affection and food. When it came to backing him I had to find help due to my lack of experience. I was quite anxious about sending him to someone I didn't know, particularly as I had tragically lost a horse at the hands of a third party when at livery somewhere else.
I saw Dani and Mike's website and contacted them. I never looked back. They inspired me with confidence from the word go. They were organised, calm and professional. They came to collect Rio and although he had not loaded before it took them fifteen minutes of calm, gentle but firm persuasion to load him. I was invited to be involved at every step of Rio's education and made weekly or twice weekly visits to see how he was getting on, I learned about their techniques and was hugely impressed. Dani and Mike have a strong belief in their ability and the horses gain confidence in them. Mike was soon riding him away (after only a week), and after four weeks so was I.
The whole experience for Rio and myself was untraumatic and easy, the costs were very reasonable and the follow up support was invaluable. I don't believe this service is easy to find in the horse industry. Mike and Dani put the horse and client first. I am now the confident owner of a confident pony, thankyou both

Skippy - Loading Problems
Skippy - owned by Fiona's daughter came to us for 2 weeks to work on his ridden and ground manners and loading problems. We worked with Skippy through leading and ground exercises - L-shapes and walking over tarpaulins before moving onto the trailer. Starting with the trailer without partitions, in two weeks Skippy learnt how to load and unload properly into the trailer and horsebox without any fuss and his owner also learnt how to load him. When the time came for Skippy to go home he loaded perfectly! We also worked on Skippy's ridden manners - first on longlines and then riding, working on lots of downwards transitions to teach him more about brakes!
Otto - Starter
A 3yr old chesnut pony that came to us for starting. Otto was very immature and quite spooky when he first came to us. After lots of desensitisation work and longlining, this lovely pony ended up hacking both on his own and in company and schooling well, what a cutie!
Missy:Missy is a 14 year old 16h TB mare with an interesting history. She was given to some farming friends of mine in Devon at the age of 5 and I was offered the ride as my previous horse had to be put down. Bred to race on the flat and very fine she was excitable and quite highly strung and could barely put one foot in front of the other though she had allegedly been backed at 3 but turned away for the next 18 months. I was the only one who rode her and had such great riding out I never needed to load her though on an occasion in the late 90’s when I tried she was pretty scared so I did not pursue it.
When I moved to Dorset in 2006 she was given to me but had to be sedated to load her but on arrival in my small yard she settled in well and with more regular contact and riding has settled down and is everything I could want with one exception – she still did not load. I spent hours and hours last summer and could get her in and did travel her once but it could take an hour to get her in, she got stressed and was inconsistent in whether she would load or not. Having known members of Practical Horsemanship from a Country Fair I was involved with I contacted them and Dani and Mike arranged to visit one weekend with sessions planned for Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. On their arrival the heavens opened but undeterred Mike and Dani set to work. Using the Dually Head Collar some basic ground work and exercises were performed before moving onto the loading exercise.
Missy certainly showed how reluctant she was but by using the headcollar and understanding the relationship required, perseverance paid off, Missy no longer resisted and she went straight into the trailer. This was repeated a few times and we called it a night. On Sunday a little consolidation work on the ground and then into the loading. No problems. Mike and Dani progressively built up the levels by putting in the partition, using front and rear ramps to unload and then we headed off down the road. Set up in the middle of a field the exercises were repeated and by the end of Sunday’s session I was long lining Missy straight into the trailer without her being flustered or exhibiting any anxiety symptoms. At one stage a ride from the local Equestrian Centre came past in the middle of me long lining but despite an overshoot I was able to correct and bring Missy into the trailer, as I had been taught, put up the ramp and drive her home.
Dani and Mike did a fantastic job in developing Missy’s confidence and also mine as well as giving me the correct techniques to continue to consolidate on the initial sessions. I am now able to say that Missy continues to load well and I will be eternally grateful to Dani and Mike for the new horizons they have opened up for Missy and me now we can load and travel.

Testimonials
Dani and Mike have assisted me in my day-to-day work with many young and problematic horses, have accompained me on many callouts and participated as well as helping organise Practical Horsemanship demonstrations. They both have an excellent work ethic and are talented at both ground work and riding. I've always found them to be both hardworking and reliable and would thoroughly recommend them if you are looking for help with your horse.
